Well nobody saw that coming…at least on our panel!

Hideki Matsuyama, who like Jordan Spieth the week before,

hadn’t won a PGA tournament since 2017 won The Masters.

Unless you were betting 10 players at once, there’s no way you

would’ve picked him.

But his awesome back 9 on Saturday made Sunday’s round

essentially a leisurely stroll around Augusta (and yes, I know the

final margin of victory was 1 but Hideki was really never in serious

doubt to lose).

I mentioned the stat about players in the top-10 after the first

round being the eventual winner…so I took my own advice and

put a couple bucks on Hideki on Saturday during the rain delay.

At the top he was going through Amen Corner and had navigated

the harder holes successfully so at 2 back, why not take a shot at

10-1? He proceeded to shoot a back nine 30 and by Saturday

night, I was darn near counting my money.

Fun tournament but please remind me to never bet Bryson

DeChambeau at The Masters ever again. His game just doesn’t

set up well for what truly is a second shot golf course.

On to one of my newer favorite tournaments, the RBC Heritage.

This was the second tournament after the Tour’s resumption last

summer and Webb Simpson not only made me a couple coins,

but gave me the idea to suggest this column to Harry. You know

I’ll be going in that direction once again. Harbour Town is a

shorter track but one that rewards accuracy.

Just a quick note that we’re going to take next week off from the

golf column as picking winners in the Zurich Classic’s two-man

scramble format is about as scientific as playing the lottery. No

thanks. So let’s see who can keep the momentum going until we

pick again in two weeks.

Once again the rules: each picker will get a simulated $200 to bet;

$100 of which will be on win bets and another $100 on top-5, top-

10, and top-20 bets only. The kicker this time is that the money

can only be spent on a maximum of three golfers in each

category. Picking winners has never been so difficult.
